JEDDAH: King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah announced Monday a new mechanism to cope with the rush of passengers. According to the new mechanism, passengers must report at the departure lounge four hours before flight time.
The decision was taken after a successful experiment during Eid Al-Fitr in view of the limited space in the lounges which are forced to accommodate three times more passengers than their capacity.
The new mechanism would help in providing service to passengers in a better way by providing them with a suitable number of workers and luggage trollies. Passengers with special needs, the elderly, and children will also be able to avail themselves of better services and will get one attendant to complete the check-in process. They will be able to get seats for waiting outside lounges, which are equipped with fans. The airport has advised those who come to receive their guests to come at a suitable time to avoid a long wait.
The airport management, in a statement said that this mechanism was arrived at after a study and experiment in coordination with security and services agencies inside the airport. The experiment proved successful while some negative aspects were detected and dealt with. They included presence of unlicensed vehicles at the airport, crowding in lounges and sitting on the floor.
The airport said the mechanism would prevent theft of luggage and entry of non-passengers into the lounges. The airport management thinks that this would help in ending crowding at the counters as it was clear that most people waiting are not passengers, but their relatives.
