RIYADH: Riyadh Gov. Prince Faisal bin Bandar inaugurated the Riyadh Shopping and Entertainment Festival 2016 at the Al-Othaim Mall in the capital on Wednesday.
Organized by the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) for the 12th year in coordination with the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTNH), the Riyadh Tourism Development Board (RTDB) and the Riyadh municipality, the festival will continue for 30 days.
Some 250 entertainment activities will take place in malls and shopping centers, including shows, plays and competitions.
Around SR5 million in gifts and prizes will be given to the winning participants in these activities, while shoppers will receive 30 to 70 percent discounts on many items as they shop.
Speaking at the inauguration, the governor thanked Custodian of the Two Holy Mosque King Salman for promoting the tourism and entertainment sectors in the Kingdom, which attract local and foreign tourists from all over the world.
“This event will help to maintain a high level of shopping and tourism in the capital during the summer with the rich entertainment and shopping activities we have lined up for citizens, residents and visitors alike,” an official from the RCCI said, adding that the festival is a very important event for the economy of Riyadh.
“The importance of the festival stems from two key goals. The first is to keep the capital vibrant during the summer, which is considered the low season because many people leave the capital for other destinations. The second goal is to retain the interest of those who are left in the capital at this time, and to attract many more people from surrounding regions,” he said.
The festival will help entertain the remaining population in the capital in addition to some 4.5 million other visitors who come to the capital from nearby regions. These visitors usually compensate the capital for those who leave in the summer, he said.
“Seventy percent of these home visitors come from within a radius of 500 km of the capital, while the remaining come from the southern regions of the Kingdom and the GCC countries, keeping the population in the capital during the summer at almost 90 percent of its usual population all year round,” he pointed out.
Chairman of the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce Abdulrahman Al-Zamil said that around 10 commercial and entertainment centers are also participating in the festival.
