The Jeddah Traffic Department will launch the events of the Gulf Traffic Week at a colorful function on Sunday.

A preparatory meeting for the week was held under the chairmanship of Jeddah Traffic Director Brig. Wasalallah Al-Harbi. The meeting agreed upon the importance of enlightening the public on traffic regulations for safe driving. It also stressed the need for the participation of the members of the society in any effort to bring down the rate of accidents in the city.

“The events of the traffic week will include an exhibition at the Red Sea Mall with the participation of all related departments and will be open in morning and evening sessions,” Al-Harbi told Arab News.

He added that the traffic department has arranged with the Directorate of Education for visits of school children to the exhibition so that they could learn about traffic regulations. Evening sessions are set apart for families.

Spokesman of the Traffic Department in Jeddah Col. Zaid Al-Hamzi said 80 percent of accidents in Jeddah were caused by running red light and speeding apart from other violations.

Al-Hamzi added that traffic officers would lecture school and university students on the need to adhere to traffic regulations during the Gulf Traffic Week celebration.

Another event will be organizing visits to accident victims under treatment in hospitals. Brochures about the week will also distributed, he said.
