The Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) has announced the discovery of six gold and two copper deposits in the Kingdom since 2010. One cooper deposit is under development currently in the Riyadh region.
SGS President Zuhair Nawab said the organization made several key achievements since 2010 in the field of metallic and nonmetallic minerals.
“SGS conducted detailed excavations, and more recently, completed topographic surveys, collected surface samples, made detailed maps, conducted geophysical studies and pulpous drilling to evaluate the reserves of raw materials and their density,” Nawab was quoted as saying in a local newspaper.
He said the preliminary results were encouraging in terms of the commercial value of the reserves. “The sediments themselves are enough to attract mining companies for further investments,” he said, adding that these types of sediments were found in Al-Reen district, 200 km to the southwest of Riyadh, and in Al-Musaynah area in Hail.
Nawab said SGS was working on an ambitious project to discover sediment deposits. “This is a national project that will be based on the linkage between the types of mineral deposits and the distribution of rock units containing them,” he said.
