The Jeddah Municipality intends to rename several streets that bear the names of individuals who belong to extremist groups that have been recently blacklisted by the Ministry of Interior, said Jeddah Mayor Hani Abu Ras.

Citizens recently demanded that the names of these streets be replaced with the names of national figures who served the Kingdom.

“The committee for naming and numbering Jeddah’s streets is a government entity and liaises fully with government bodies,” said Abu Ras.

The Ministry of Interior earlier announced the names of extremist religious groups and individuals, in addition to other local, regional and international terrorist organizations.

The royal decree states that any Saudi citizen who is found guilty of joining such organizations will be subject to legal prosecution.

Blacklisted organizations and groups include Al-Qaeda, the Syrian Al-Nusra Front, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Jund Ansar Allah movement.

The Makkah governorate had set out clear standards for naming streets and squares four years ago, after which the governorate advised taking into consideration the names of individuals who served the region.
