TAIF: The Education Ministry is taking steps to reinforce the “authority of the teacher” as the regulations are set to take effect during the new academic year.
The ministry gave the green light for schools to call in police if any student attacks his teachers or staff members. It also laid down guidelines as when the police could be called in.
Penalties are on a sliding-scale basis, depending on the type of offense. The ministry listed a group of violations including verbal abuse toward the teachers or staff, undermining them through uncalled actions such as throwing chalk, spraying soft drinks, imitating teachers, and sarcasm against them.
Police can be called in if need be, students can be taken to the Guidance Services Unit, he/she can be banned for a defined period; the student could be transferred from one school to another, banned for a defined period, and even dismissed for one or more terms.
The parent of the pupil will be called and made to sign a pledge not to repeat the offense, issue an apology, the student could be transferred, the violation will be registered, and 10 points will be slashed from his or her grade for bad behavior. The student maybe banned for one week; he can be banned for a month but this must be approved by the head of education.
The police can be called to the school, but this depends on the nature of the situation. As part of the requirements, a student may need to undergo counseling through the Guidance Services Unit where a team of specialists with life-skills would be appointed.
The pupil may need to be involved a social and voluntary activities under the supervision of the Department of Education in accordance with a timetable approved by the guardian of the pupil. If the offense is repeated, the pupil may be banned from school or transferred, according to Al-Madinah.
