The Riyadh Traffic Department is conducting a public opinion survey about traffic performance and its systems by putting certain regulations to a vote, according to Col. Ali Abdullah Al-Dabiekhi, director of the Riyadh Traffic Department.

He said the department benefits from the voting process in reviewing and developing some regulations. Votes will be sent to the General Department of Traffic by citizens and residents through a special regulatory directorate for analysis.

The survey coincides with another poll conducted on the Riyadh traffic website about drivers’ respect for traffic laws. About 21,000 people participated in the survey and 64 percent said drivers’ obedience to traffic laws is weak or unacceptable. About 36 percent said there was an acceptable level of abidance on the part of drivers.

The official also said parking in unallocated areas is a violation that should be stopped and that his department’s personnel monitor all illegally parked cars, adding that traffic tickets will be issued to the driver whether he was in the car or not.

Al-Dabeikhi said plans are being devised to put a stop to all joyriding by deputing secret patrols at points where joyriders gather. These patrols are expected to curtail joyriding in Riyadh.

He said that parents should monitor their children's driving habits.
