JEDDAH: At dawn on Saturday, Civil Defense teams in Jeddah moved to extinguish a fire that broke out in a 1,600-square-meter warehouse, thus recording the second fire in the warehouse area, and the third in the province in the past four days.
Makkah Civil Defense Spokesman Col. Saeed Sarhan said Civil Defense in Jeddah quarantined the area of the fire until further investigation is completed by experienced fire investigation experts.
He said the fire broke out in a warehouse which was constructed of cement bricks and iron plates, and which was storing schoolbags, as well as women’s bags and other items.
He explained Civil Defense teams built a water barrier around nearby warehouses to protect them from the fire spilling over to them.
“The fire destroyed a large area of the warehouse while all doors were firmly closed which forced the rescue teams to open access routes to reach the source of the fire,” said the spokesman.
He said the losses will be ascertained later by a Civil Defense investigation team, noting that the fire did not cause any injuries or deaths.
The Civil Defense spokesman commended the role and efforts made by a team of volunteers, security patrols, the electricity company, the Saudi Red Crescent, the National Water Company, and Jeddah Secretariat, in addition to the efforts made by the teams of the Civil Defense who extinguished the fire and protected the adjoining warehouses by preventing the fire from reaching them.
Brig. Gen. Ghazi Al-Ghamdi, the director of the General Department of Civil Defense in Jeddah, was on the scene to supervise the operations.
