The High Commission for Riyadh Development (HCRD) recently revealed that the Traffic Accident Analysis (TAA) this year has shown a drop in mortality rates to 249 from 479 deaths since the creation of the Traffic Safety Strategy (TSS) in 2002.

There was also a decline in the number of serious injuries to about 809 this year compared to 1,546 in 2003.

According to data from the major indexes, the global analysis of mortality rates from traffic accidents (deaths per 10,000 vehicles), the number of fatalities have recorded a continuous decline over the years following the implementation of the strategy by the Traffic Department in the city from (3.5 deaths per 10 thousand vehicles) in 2004 to (0.69 percent deaths per 10 thousand vehicles) by the end of 2011. This is despite the annual increase in the number of vehicles and trips in the city.

The positive results have contributed to the reduction of social and economic losses and in the number of hospital beds that were used for patients involved in traffic accidents. The TSS has also played a major role in the provision of modern technology as an extended process for the management of traffic accidents, and to improve the speed of response to accident sites.

The HCRD is currently implementing various projects and practical solutions for many problems relating to traffic safety under its “five-year operational plan” with the participation of the stakeholders in the city.
