An Indian expatriate has fallen victim to an unlikely and unfortunate chain of events. Shamsul Haq, 36, is stranded in Madinah after being left paralyzed following an alleged medical error.

Haq, from Bihar in north India, is a laborer at a small firm in Madinah.

“I visited a polyclinic on Jan. 15 after suffering headache and fever. I was given an injection by an Asian doctor. I then went to purchase some medicine at a nearby pharmacy, where I fell unconscious. Customers and bystanders took me to the same polyclinic, but it refused to admit me, saying that I required a neurology specialist, which the polyclinic does not have,” said Haq.

“After seeing his condition, I took him back to the same polyclinic where he had gotten his injection, but it refused to treat him. I then took him to different private hospitals, but no one would take him in,” said Mohammed Imran from Hyderabad, who was passing by when Haq fainted.

Haq said: “The next morning, I was admitted to a private hospital. I suddenly became paralyzed in my right arm and leg. They gave me medication for five days, but I was then discharged because I had exceeded the limit on my health insurance card.

“I have nowhere to go. I am bedridden. I can’t even go to the toilet.”
