Saudi Ambassador to the United States Adel Al-Jubeir honored a group of 10 outstanding Saudi students, including the Abdullah Bugshan Research Chair for Stimulating Substances and Bone Construction (BRCSSBC) at King Saud University, and Dr. Mansour Al-Askar, a master’s degree student at Tufts University, Boston.
The students were honored on the sidelines of the Career Day Fair, which was held in Washington D.C. recently.
Research initiated by the Bugshan research chair has produced 13 scientific achievements that have been published in major scientific journals in the world of ESI (Essential Science Indicators).
Expressing his happiness on receiving the honor, chair supervisor Khaled Al-Huzaimi, said: “This recognition of the scientific achievements is a testimony of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and his government’s keenness toward scientific research.” He said that an annual ceremony was held last week under the patronage of the Riyadh Gov. Prince Sattam to honor the outstanding works in scientific research at KSU.
Al-Huzaimi said the Bugshan research chair has lead in excellence, making him a four times recipient of the honor recognizing excellence in research.
Over 42 studies by the chair have been published in 36 prestigious scientific journals, in addition to its participation in co-authoring two chapters in one of the most important reference books on pre-clinical research.
In Jun 2009, KSU’s Rector Abdullah Al-Othman and Eng. Abdullah Bugshan signed an agreement to establish the Bugshan Research Chair for Dentistry.
Research chairs at KSU fall into two categories: One that is established with the help of financial investors and the other established solely by the university. Private companies generally establish chairs to create research that targets specific areas of study, while other companies allow the university to determine the scope of a chair’s research.
Eng. Abdullah Bugshan, chairman of the Bugshan Group in Saudi Arabia, said he believes that research chairs are meant to address problems facing society, adding that dentistry is one subject that applies to people in all regions of the Kingdom. He expressed his pleasure to continue financing the initiative and other research chairs at KSU that tackle the many social problems faced by society.
Al-Huzaimi stressed that an important focus of the chair is bone research, particularly the developments in advanced polymers that can help the growth of bones. The chair will strive to raise its visibility in the global research arena through collaborations with distinguished international research centers, universities and scientists.
Al-Huzaimi and his colleagues have already developed close communications with various Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, organizing and participating in local and regional training and research programs.
