ST. LOUIS: Matt Adams homered, Matt Carpenter drove in two runs and Adam Wainwright saved a tired bullpen by lasting seven innings for the St. Louis Cardinals in their 10-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

It was hardly a vintage performance by Wainwright (2-1), who struck out eight and helped his own cause with an RBI single. He gave up Junior Lake's homer on his first pitch and allowed six more hits after that. The four runs were twice as many as Wainwright yielded in his first two starts.

St. Louis did most of its damage off starter Carlos Villanueva (1-3), who allowed nine runs and 10 hits in three innings.

Brewers 3 Pirates 2: In Milwaukee, Carlos Gomez hit a leadoff homer, Jonathan Lucroy drove in the tiebreaking run with an eighth-inning single and Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh for its eighth consecutive victory.

Gomez got the Brewers (9-2) started with a 432-foot drive to center field off Edinson Volquez, and Khris Davis scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 in the second.

Pittsburgh tied it in the third on Starling Marte's groundout and Travis Snider's single, snapping Yovani Gallardo's scoreless streak to start the season at 14 2-3 innings.

Lucroy singled to right off reliever Mark Melancon (0-1) to drive in Ryan Braun, who slid in ahead of the throw to the plate.

Braves 6 Nationals 3: In Atlanta, Freddie Freeman had three hits, including a homer, and Atlanta beat Washington to continue its early success against the Nationals.

Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is expected to miss four to six weeks after breaking his right thumb when he was picked off second base in the fifth inning. Before the game, the Nationals placed outfielder Denard Span on the seven-day disabled list with a concussion.

B.J. Upton had two hits, including his first homer, and Dan Uggla drove in two runs with two hits for the Braves. Justin Upton had three hits, including two doubles. Evan Gattis also had three hits.

After winning two of three at Washington in the opening week, the Braves have won the first two games of a home series against their NL East rivals.

Dodgers 8 Diamondbacks 5: In Phoenix, Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer and Zack Greinke improved to 3-0 as Los Angeles defeated Arizona.

Gonzalez, who had a two-run homer and five RBIs in the series opener Friday, followed that up with a shot to the left-field seats off Wade Miley (2-2) in the third inning.

Greinke (3-0) gave up a run on eight hits in 5 1-3 innings, striking out eight with no walks.

Phillies 5 Marlins 4, 10 innings: In Philadelphia, Jimmy Rollins homered with two outs in the 10th inning and Philadelphia overcame two home runs by Giancarlo Stanton to beat Miami.

Rollins drove a 2-2 pitch from Dan Jennings (0-1) into the seats in left. It was the 201st career homer for Rollins, and the second game-ender of his career. The first came June 23, 2010, against Cleveland.

B.J. Rosenberg (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Rockies 1 Giants 0: In San Francisco, Tommy Kahnle and four relievers combined for two-hit ball over six innings after Brett Anderson was injured, leading Colorado past Matt Cain and San Francisco.

Troy Tulowitzki had a sacrifice fly in the third, and Kahnle (2-0) allowed one baserunner in two innings. Matt Belisle, Adam Ottavino, Rex Brothers and LaTroy Hawkins pitched an inning apiece to complete the three-hitter, with Hawkins earning his second save.

Interleague

Rays 1 Reds 0: In Cincinnati, Alex Cobb went seven innings to extend Tampa Bay's run of solid starting pitching, and James Loney homered against slumping Cincinnati.

The Rays came into the interleague series with a 1-8 mark against Cincinnati. They've taken the first two games with shutdown pitching and just enough offense.

Cobb (1-1) pitched seven shutout innings against Texas on Sunday but got a no-decision. He kept the scoreless streak going Saturday, limiting Cincinnati's struggling lineup to four hits without walking a batter.

Tigers 6 Padres 2: In San Diego, Justin Verlander had the first two hits of his career and pitched seven strong innings to lead Detroit over San Diego.

Verlander, who came in 0 for 26 with 15 strikeouts, singled up the middle off Ian Kennedy (1-2) in the second inning and had a base hit to right in the fourth, although he had to hustle to avoid being thrown out by Chris Denorfia. Verlander (1-1) scored on Torii Hunter's two-run single in the fourth.
