The third Riyadh Triathletes event of the season was Duathlon No. 1, which entailed a 3km run followed by a 10.4km cycle then a 2km run.
Hot conditions at Ranco Farm saw an excellent venue with much improved conditions from the thunderstorms and rain of this event last year. The event attracted 78 participants ranging in age from 5 to 68 and including club members who raced on a bike for the first time on a challenging and technical course.
Kris Ahlin stormed to a 1 minute overall victory having destroyed the remainder of the field on the undulating bike course. Second place overall went to newcomer Kenneth Heney with a great first performance here in Riyadh in a promising start to the season.
Ladies winner Rosie Wild had a commendable first-ever cycling race on a brand new bike. The junior boys title went to Cameron Ball with a very strong bike, but not quite beating his dad Martin on this occasion.
Bruno Syfig won the men’s masters and also took third place on the bike leg. Other category winners included Fiona Nichol (ladies veterans), Annie Wild (female age group), Anders Berg (male masters), Mo Foustuk (first 2km run leg) and Kenneth Heney (3KM run).
A notable mention must go to Dan Bennellick for smashing second place on the bike and achieving seventh overall, proof that secret Strava training is paying off.
Once again a great crowd of spectators gave vocal encouragement to all participants, with particular thanks to Mohammed Al-Marri and his family for their enthusiastic support. The event saw a number of newcomers to triathlon and the first outing for a number of new bikes. Up next is the club’s first triathlon event (swim 450m — bike 12km – Run 3km), where participants will be tested on all three triathlon disciplines, or any combination of each one if they prefer.
Riyadh Triathletes would like to thank main sponsors Airbus Defense and Space, 2XU and Carrefour @5 Le Mall for their ongoing support this season. The season includes three types of event namely biathlon (swim-run), duathlon (run-bike-run) and triathlon (swim-bike-run).
