Association of Tennis Clubs (ASTEC) opened its 25th team tennis tournament at the weekend in simple but colorful ceremony at the tennis courts of Al-Bilad Hotel in Jeddah Corniche.

Starting off with the teams parading their colors, the event drew 60 entries for the two months long activity.

The teams were welcomed to the tournament by the outgoing ASTEC Chairman Randy Martin who thanked everyone for participating and bid his adieu after two years of overseeing the association. Introduced next was the new ASTEC Chairman Chet Bautista who likewise thanked the Al-Bilad management for the use of their facilities and all the participating clubs and teams for supporting the activity.

Opening day special awardees include best in uniform winners for Category C Luna Milk, category B2 Jeddah Ranao Tennis Club (JRTC), category LMX team Uncle Sam and category MMX team ELAF Group.

DP World opened proceedings with a 3-1 win against ELAF Group in the Middle Mixed (MMX) category. Controlling the first set were DP World’s Jotham Matina-ao-Ador Olivo scoring an 8-6 win over Leo Perez-Dante Nebrida.

This was followed by another win in the second set by Allan Bergosa-Joel Sacal against Ronald-Nilo Salvedia 8-3 to post a 2-0 lead. Inspired by their big lead, DP World’s Jimmy S-Choy Argarin was unreachable with an 8-4 win against Lito Dare-Jun Atienza to win the match. Completing the match, ELAF’s Obet Tumale-Rey Tablang scored the first point with an 8-4 win against Rhill Macapagal-Darrell Eltagonde to post a 3-1 tally win for DP World.

DJ Auto Parts reigned supreme as it blanked Toyota Express 4-0. First set had Nour Panizales-Jun Ordonez scoring an 8-5 win over Raffy-Joey Ibay.

Then came Carlo Guese-Marlon Ordono’s 8-0 default win when the Express’ Yully-Lito De Mesa could not make it on time to play. In the third set singles Romeo Espino clipped Rafik Sheikh 8-5. To close the match with a sweep Ben Consolacio-Allan Maya Basa won by 8-2 over Mike-Sam Silvestre.
