American Rusty Daggett and South African Mark Campbell produced their second straight victory as partners when they won by countback from the pair of Rohit Jamwal and Qasir Hussain on Saturday in the 7th Annual Pakistan Day Open Golf Tournament 2014 at Dirab Golf & Country Club.

Exactly five weeks after winning the NCB-Sanad Charity Golf Tournament, Daggett and Campbell again took home the champion trophy at the end of this two-ball Texas Scramble format competition on a pleasantly cool sunny day.

Daggett told Arab News “they were on fire” when they won the Sanad event but this time they had to grind it out to triumph when nobody played spectacular golf.

“We did not expect to win. We played good, decent golf but not that good. We were surprised we won,” said Daggett who works at Personnel Service branch of Vinnell Arabia.

“We were struggling a lot,” he added.

While the golf was not good their score was good enough to win. The two sides tied on 65 but Daggett and Campbell edged out Jamwal-Hussain when their back nine scores were compared to break the tie 34-38.

Daggett effectively retained his title as he also won last year's tournament with Canadian lady golfer Ruby Klawikowski.

Another successful partnership of Graham Gunn and David Treadgold, which had yielded a number of victories at Dirab, took the third position on 66.

Filipinos Resty Sibug and Eric Liquigan partnered for the first time and managed a podium finish at fourth place on 67 despite the lack of practice by Liquigan.

Rounding out the first five winners were Moiz Ahmed and Syed Shafiq at fifth place on 69.

The longest drive award for men and ladies went to Hussain and Liz Kennedy, while Shafiq earned the nearest to the pin plum in the tournament that began exclusively for Pakistani golfers and guests until it grew to become an open competition.

With a team handicap of 5, Daggett and Campbell posted a gross score of 2-under 70 (36-34) in a round that contained three birdies and one bogey.

Starting at hole No. 3, the winning pair dropped a shot when they three-putted for bogey at the sixth hole.

After parring the next two holes Campbell hit his approach to six feet of the cup and made the putt on 9. Rusty then set up Campbell for another birdie with a superb second shot that settled close to the pin.

Their third birdie of the day was on the par-5 15 where Rusty converted his birdie attempt from 12 feet.

Jamwal and Hussain played off 7 handicap and navigated the parkland course at even par-72 (34-38). They birdied two of their first three holes in a fast start but then stumbled with three bogeys against one birdie on the back side.

Pakistan Ambassador Naeem Khan handed over prizes to winners during the awarding ceremony along with Abunayyan Group Deputy General Manager Fahad Abunayyan, Dirab Committee Chairman Tariq Javed and former chairman Nasser Uddin Siddiqui.
