RIYADH: Little over a month after teaming with David Treadgold to win the 1st Annual Birst Middle East Open Golf Tournament, Graham Gunn claimed Best Net honors at the Sinoma Open Golf Tourment 2014 at Dirab Golf & Country Club on Saturday.

South African Gunn played arguably one of his best rounds to shoot 75 in benign conditions just 3-over on the flat but challenging 6,7560-yard layout.

With a 10 handicap Gunn had the low net of the day at 65, and his game was so good his gross score could have also given him the Best Gross title. Instead, another South African, Mark Campbell, won under the one major prize per player rule. Campbell compiled a 77 on nines of 42-35 to become the Best Gross champion in the 18-hole full handicap stroke play competition sponsored for the third time by Sinoma International Engineering Co., which operates one of the largest cement manufacturing plants in the world with headquarters in Beijing, China. M. N. Bin Rajeh and Partners Contracting Co. through GM Khalid Raja is co-sposor.

Gunn, who won the Birst Texas Scramble format event with Treadgold on Dec. 13 also at Dirab, birdied the two par fives on the back nine where he had only one dropped shot on 18 for a 35.

Gunn tallied four bogeys in a front nine 40.

Like Gunn Campbell, who played off 11 handicap, also enjoyed good shotmaking on the back side to hole in three birdies on 10, 11 and 14 against two bogeys.

Campbell endured an indifferent front nine as he stumbled with a double bogey on the eighth hole to go with bogeys on 2, 5, 6 and 9.

Filipino hotshot Resty Sibug won the men’s First Division (0-9 handicap) on countback from John Barrett after both players tied on 71. The back nine scores were compared to break the tie with Sibug on 39 to Barrett’s 42.

Sibug, president of the FGA (Filipino Golf Association), fired a gross score of 78 but he complained of a putter that refused to cooperate, at least on the front nine, after its shaft was shortened a bit. Barrett, with a 9 handicap, carded 80.

Jose Vigil took the third position on 72 from a gross of 81 and 9 handicap.

American RustyDaggett captured the men’s Second Division (10-18) title on 69 from a gross score of 81 and 12 handicap with Indian Kamal Fareed and Ron Bills second and third countback was applied to break their deadlock at 70.

In the men’s Third Division (19-28), Japanese Iro Hiroaki was the winner on 67 (95-28). Farrukh Sheikh wound up second on 70 (96-26) and Orazio Moretti third on 71 (94-23).

The Ladies Division crown went to Susan Tessier on 73 (95-22) with Martin O. Reilly second 75 (95-20) and Meg Fordham third 76 (99-23).

The men’s and ladies longest drive award went to Filipino teen David Lloyd Bantug and Fordham, and the closet to the pin to George Baaklini.

Trophies and golf merchandise were handed out to the winners by Sinoma Saudi branch office General Manager Liu Hao assisted by present and past Dirab Golf Committee chairmen Tariq Javed and Nasser Uddin Siddiqi during the awards ceremony.
