Minister of Social Affairs Yusuf Al-Othaimeen said his ministry spent more than SR 3 billion on the disabled. About 75,000 disabled persons and their families joined awareness and rehabilitation programs that were sponsored with this money.
“SR 1 billion were spent purchasing special cars for the disabled,” said Al-Othaimeen.
The ministry celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Prince Salman Center for Disability Research (PSCDR). Chairman of board of trustees of the center, Prince Sultan bin Salman, said it had become a major partner of the most advanced and important scientific institutes in the world in the field of genetic researches, stem cells and other fields.
Prince Sultan said that early screening programs saved 900 children from being handicapped later in life. The center carried out several programs with the cooperation of King Abdulaziz City of Science and Technology and King Faisal Specialist Hospital. Other programs include an easy outreach with the cooperation of the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and the rehabilitation of the disabled for the job market with the help of the Ministry of Labor.
