Three hurt in jostling

JEDDAH: Jostling at the gate of the Passport Department in Jeddah’s Al-Kandarah district on Tuesday resulted in injuries to three people. One of them had to be hospitalized, witnesses said.
Makkah Passport Department spokesman Lt. Col. Muhammad Al-Hussein said a number of people showed up at the gate before the official working hours and tried to get first in line to have their transactions processed.
The injuries were caused by falling shards of glass after a barrier at the entrance gate got shattered when the crowd pushed and shoved.
A number of eyewitnesses said the incident was a result of the department’s decision to stop opening the gate before 7 a.m.
