In a wide hall among many famous jewelry shops in Dubai Mall, 32 interior design engineering students of Ajman University of Science & Technology showed their own textile jewels in the shape of innovative chair designs.
The exhibition took place from Dec. 20 to 24. Rana Bassam, a Palestinian student, explained the concept behind her project “Hanthala”: “The base of the chair is second-hand which gives this project a sustainable feel, it’s like we are recycling it.
“I have chosen black as color of my chair to reflect the Palestinian suffering, while I have placed an embroidered map of Palestine and a hand-stitched character of Hanthala, the famous character by Palestinian cartoonist Naji Al-Ali, at the back of the chair.”
Student Yomna Ahmed from Egypt said her “Lollipop” project is a mix between classic and modernity. “I have used a leather seating against the raw back of lollipop-style circles of recycled threads,” she added.
Zeina AlShawaf, a Syrian student said of her mysterious sea-themed project: “I decided to name it “Coral” because it was inspired by the rich colors of the sea and all the treasures that are hidden underneath the surface. All the work you see here is hand-embroidered.”
The contemporary project “Amour,” a unique combination of Victorian and modern ages, was made by student Hessa Al-Mannaei. “I have represented the Victorian age by placing a profile of a lady wearing a Victorian ruffled dress on the back and bottom areas of the chair. However, the modernity of this chair comes from using two opposite colors in the color wheel: orange and blue. These are symbols of the contradiction concept.”
