JEDDAH: Corruption is the biggest threat to Pakistan and it is eating into the foundation of the state, said Imran Khan, chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
Speaking to Urdu News, a sister publication of Arab News, Imran, who was in the Kingdom to perform Umrah, said he could foresee general elections in 2016.
He accused Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of corruption saying the Panama Papers have revealed his family’s involvement in shady deals. The prime minister, he said, was using the government machinery to cover-up the issue. Imran said the prime minister of Iceland resigned when his wife’s named figured in the Panama Papers. Sharif should also resign, he stressed.
He also accused Prime Minister Sharif of bribing the media and some politicians to drive a wedge among opposition leaders.
He said intelligence agencies were being used by the government to hush up the issue and that is also aimed at defaming the armed forces.
Imran said the entire opposition is united against the government and any opposition leader withdrawing now will be deemed to have betrayed us and accepted bribe from the government.
Imran congratulated Sadiq Khan on his election as the mayor of London. He, however, said, Zac Goldsmith was an honest person and he lost because of his wrong campaign.
About Saudi Arabia, Imran said, it is a very close friend of Pakistan. Pakistanis living here are contributing to their country’s economy by sending huge remittances.
Imran said he will try to get voting rights for overseas Pakistanis in the next elections.
About the Vision 2030, the Tehreek-e-Insaf chief said it is a very wise decision.
