THE UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations warned against “demonizing” refugees on Friday, after a global poll revealed 60 percent of people thought radicals were posing as refugees.

Around 40 percent also said they wanted their borders shut to refugees, with support for such a move highest in Turkey, India and Hungary.

The Ipsos MORI survey of attitudes toward refugees and immigration polled more than 16,000 people in 22 countries including Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia.

Meanwhile, a French judge rejected a bid by authorities in Calais to close unlicensed shops and eateries in the northern port’s “Jungle” migrant camp.

The authorities sought an emergency order to close 72 unlicensed stalls and restaurants dotted among the tents housing at least 4,500 migrants and asylum-seekers who are aiming to reach Britain.

But in his ruling, the judge said that while the concerns expressed were “completely understandable,” the matter was not urgent enough to warrant the expulsion of the vendors.

He also highlighted the social role of the shops, cafes and restaurants where hard-up migrants can eat the cuisine of their native lands at a fraction of the cost of a French restaurant meal.

While he accepted that the outlets lacked “any administrative authorization” and that some “do not respect the most basic sanitary rules,” they had a valuable role as “calm meeting places for the migrants.”

The ruling comes as the charities and migrants’ associations who assist the camp’s residents say they believe a new influx has pushed numbers back up to above 9,000.

That tally includes 1,750 in more permanent accommodation created from shipping containers.

The local authorities are due to carry out a new head count next week but for now are sticking to the figure of around 4,500 from a survey in mid-June.

French authorities have made repeated efforts to shut down the Jungle.
