THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Hundreds of thousands of people at an annual prayer congregation in the southern Indian state of Kerala pledged to fight terrorism and counter the negative effects of social media that is spreading hatred among various communities. “There should be a widespread awareness campaign against the social media being misused for promoting disintegration of society based on identities instead of growth and progress,” the resolution adopted at the prayer meet, organized by Ma’din Academy, said.
Participants also took oath to promote world peace and foster communal harmony.
“We have seen the irresponsible use of social media taking its toll on society. It’s leading to even murders, suicides loot and rioting,” the resolution said. “Your ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ in social media should be to promote peace and harmony in society.”
This annual conclave was attended by people from across the country and abroad. Delegates from Australia, UK, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Gulf countries attended.
Sayyid Ibrahim Khaleel Al-Bukhari, chairman of Ma’din Academy and founder of the conference administered the pledge for world peace and against terrorism and alcoholism.
He urged the youth to make themselves aware of the need for communal harmony and peaceful co-existence upholding the religious and cultural unity of India.
“Even when we take pride in being a Muslim, we respect and honor all other faiths and their followers. We will keep a continuous vigil against forces that work to destroy the oneness of humanity,” he said.
