ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday summoned India’s deputy high commissioner to raise concerns over the roughing up of a diplomat in New Delhi, the foreign ministry said.

Pakistani diplomat Zirgham Raza, the first secretary of Pakistan’s High Commission in India, was attacked in New Delhi on Monday by a group of men after his car hit a motorcycle near a university campus, NDTV news channel said.

The Indian deputy high commissioner was called to the foreign ministry today to raise “serious concerns” over the incident, the ministry said in a statement.

It added first secretary Raza and his driver Haider Zaman had been physically abused.

The Indian diplomat was informed “such incidents are uncalled for, unnecessary and do not augur well for the overall bilateral relations.”

“Government of Pakistan calls upon government of India to ensure that such incidents do not recur,” said the statement.

Earlier in the day, the Indian foreign secretary, Ranjan Mathai, called his Pakistani counterpart Jalil Abbas Jilani to “express his regrets over this unfortunate incident and assured him that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.”

Relations between the two countries have been fractious in recent weeks, with both sides protesting the deaths of prisoners held by the other.

The murder of an Indian prisoner in a Pakistani jail was followed by the murder of a Pakistani prisoner in an Indian jail last month.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947, two of them over the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.
