BARNALA, India: At a rally in Punjab’s Barnala district on Saturday, Congress President Sonia Gandhi targeted Narendra Modi for his much-discussed “Gujarat model” of development, NDTV reported.

“God save the country from this sort of model,” she said, “it has many problems.”

Modi, 63, is the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate and is forecast to lead his party to its strongest-ever electoral result. Sonia Gandhi’s son, Rahul, is leading the campaign for the incumbent Congress, which, after 10 years in power, is expected to perform abysmally.

Also on Saturday, local workers of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi were found jostling with each other to shake hands with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Priyanka, 42, was campaigning in Banbhariya village in Amethi where her brother Rahul is seeking re-election from.

He faces Kumar Vishwas of the AAP who has promised to oust him and end dynastic politics, in a reference to the sway held by the Gandhis over the prestigious Lok Sabha seat.

As Priyanka alighted from her vehicle, she was surrounded by a group of AAP activists who were sporting the trademark Gandhi caps, carrying the party name and a picture of their leader, Arvind Kejriwal.

She mingled freely with the rather excited group who were also heard complaining about the condition of the roads in the area. Priyanka was later also heard smilingly asking the AAP workers to join the Congress, while shaking hands with them before she left.

In January, Rahul, in a similar manner, had met AAP workers in Amethi.
