LAS VEGAS, Nevada: Four teams — defending champions Samoa, Fiji, South Africa and New Zealand — each won their opening two matches Friday on the first day of the USA Sevens tournament.
The biggest surprise was Spain’s 24-14 win over Australia after the European side earlier lost 19-12 to the Samoans.
The results at Sam Boyd Stadium left all 16 teams in contention for Cup quarterfinal spots with eight more pool matches scheduled for Saturday ahead of the playoffs later Saturday and the group finals on Sunday.
England, which won last weekend’s Wellington Sevens in New Zealand, lost both its opening matches to Fiji and Portugal. Kenya, which lost the Wellington final to England, lost to Canada and narrowly beat Uruguay.
