We would like to thank Arab News for its commitment to serve the citizens and cooperate with National Water Company (NWC) in providing relief to the public in general.
Referring to Feb. 21 Arab News report, “Overflowing water causes chaos,” we would however like to clarify that NWC takes all necessary steps and actions to resolve all the problems pertaining to overflowing of groundwater since the responsibilities of lowering groundwater shifted from Jeddah Municipality to NWC.
The water leakages at the Prince Miteb and Sharbatly Street intersection were caused by the high groundwater level that led to leaking of water into the sewage network that is being constructed in the area. Groundwater leakage overflows the sewage network, which is still under construction, from the lowest level in the network. However, prompt action has been taken to control the overflow by way of continuous pumping of groundwater. Currently, the leakage was controlled by NWC experts, and road maintenance has been in progress.
As for Shaikh bin Baz Street in Safa district, NWC is investigating the groundwater overflow and actions have already been taken.
As for another report published in Arab News, “Groundwater overflow wreaks havoc in east Jeddah neighborhoods,” (Feb. 12) we would like to clarify that our experts are investigating the reasons behind the overflow and actions will be taken immediately accordingly.
However, prompt action has already been taken to control the overflow and continuous pumping of groundwater is going on. Moreover, NWC has instructed the area contractor to maintain the roads where overflow of water has taken place. - Eng. Abdullah Alassaf, City Business Unit General Manager, Jeddah
