Aramco continues to investigate cyber attack

DAMMAM: Saudi Aramco continues to investigate the malicious virus that attacked the oil giant’s computer network on Aug. 15.
“The investigation of this incident is still ongoing,” the company said in a statement to the media yesterday.
Referring to news reports in some sections of the international and local media regarding the findings of the investigation, Saudi Aramco said: “We want to emphasize that these reports are not based on real facts.”
The reports, quoting unnamed sources, suggested that the investigations were over and that one or more insiders with high-level access had assisted the hackers.
“The company would like to emphasize its long-standing position on not commenting on ongoing investigations,” said Saudi Aramco.
The company announced that its electronic network was functioning normally following a complete and thorough scanning. “We have reinforced our network security systems and further enhanced security related technologies of the network,” said Saudi Aramco.
The company reiterated that the virus, which only affected personal workstations, had no significant impact on the oil giant’s administrative operations or the productivity of its employees.
“This was achieved through restoring the affected workstations in a fast and effective manner and in time for employees returning to work after the Eid Al-Fitr holiday,” said the statement. “Internal email services were also restored in a timely manner by the company’s IT experts.”
The company emphasized that none of its oil and gas operations was affected by the incident. “All of the company’s commitments toward its local and international customers were fully met,” the statement added.
