ALKHOBAR, 25 January — Ben Tinampay thundered to a 2nd place finish in the ongoing Filbowler pre-qualifying tourney for the forthcoming 2002 Haj Goodwill Bowling Games. Ben seared the lanes with scores of 781, 758 and 897 in the best of three (3) series accumulating a total of 2,436 pinfalls or an average of 203 per game over 12 games. Fresh from vacation and a self-imposed break in bowling due to a shoulder injury, Ben came back with ferocity like a fire-spitting dragon. His 15-lb El Nino Storm bowling ball rolled and arched its way to the pins like a roaring fireball toppling the pins in a series of strikes and spares.
Ben, an ABC Bowlers stalwart and anchor, injured his right shoulder during one of his practice games for the 1st Season of the 6th Inter-Commercial Bowling League last year. He has fully recovered and the humble and friendly Boholano is back in his usual form and style — a bowler to reckon with! For his feat, Ben was awarded a gift voucher for the weekly High Series.
Ace bowler Elmer Bonifacio, continues to lead the pre-qualifying round with a total series of 2,549 pinfalls. For the 2nd week running, Bonifacio is awarded the weekly High Series, this time though being 2nd to Tinampay. A true blooded sportsman, Elmer is team captain of Sky Freight Forwarders team in the ongoing 2nd Season of the 6th Inter-Commercial Bowling League held every Monday & Tuesday at the Algosaibi Bowling Center. The 2nd week saw the seasoned bowlers in the likes of Ed "Tiger" Mendoza, Rocky "Idol" Tan, and Egay "Idol2" Aquino climbing up the Magic 10. Apart from Bonifacio and Tinampay, the following bowlers currently share the honors to be in the magic 10: Joey dela Cruz, 2,427; Ely Soberano, 2,417; Cris Dulatre, 2,404; Ronald Pineda, 2,401; Rocky Tan, 2,392; Ed Mendoza, 2390; Egay Aquino, 2,384; and Jun Arcano, 2,384. Whoever will eventually emerge as the Top 10 pre-qualifiers by the end of the pre-qualifying round on January 31, 2002, will receive gift certificates. The final round of the pre-qualifying event will be held on February 1, 2002.
The 2002 All-Filipino Haj Goodwill Games promises to be a blockbuster for the bowling aficionados participating in the 3-day bowling competition.
