JEDDAH, 15 March — The 5th annual Volvo Invitational Golf Classic will tee-off at the Durrah Golf Club (DGC) on March 22.
Giving details, Yousuf Khaja, general manager of Volvo at Zahid Tractor, said yesterday that more than 120 of the Kingdom’s golfers would participate in this year’s tournament.
“The growth of golf has been phenomenal even as the game is still in its infancy in the Kingdom. We’ve consciously associated Zahid and Volvo to support this game as more Saudis and expats are turning to this game. Going by our last year’s experience, we’ve stronger participation this year.” The tournament will be played on an individual Stableford format with a maximum handicap allowance of 24 for men and 36 for women. There are exciting prizes for all participants and the winner in each division will receive a customized Volvo tournament crystal. At stake will be two new Volvo cars - S60 and S80 - as hole-in-one prizes. The overall winner of the tournament will be flown to Spain to participate in the Volvo Klassic World Amateur Final Tournament where golfers from 70 countries around the world compete to win the amateur title.
For the last five years, Khaja said, Zahid Tractor and Volvo were largely responsible for promoting golf in Jeddah and were one of the DGC’s main supporters. “Working together, we’re hoping to strengthen golfing in the Kingdom and position the DGC and academy as an ideal venue for golfers,” said Geoff Robertshaw, general manager of DGC. “And due to the rising popularity of the sport, we’re looking at increasing the number of tournaments and creating a comprehensive events schedule at the golf club for our members as well as attracting newcomers to this sport,” he added.
