RIYADH, 22 May — Saudi Arabia yesterday announced the names of their players taking part in the soccer World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan. Prince Sultan ibn Fahd, president of the Youth Welfare Presidency, has approved the 23-member squad, the announcement added.
The players are: Muhammad Al-Daie, Muhammad Al-Khojaly, Mabrouk Zayed, Abdullah Suleiman, Reza Takur, Mohsen Al-Harithy, Fouzi Al-Shahry, Ahmad Al-Dokhy, Muhammad Shaliya, Hussein Abdul Ghani, Mansour Al-Thaqafi, Muhammad Noor, Khamees Owairan, Abdullah Al-Wakid, Nawaf Al-Tamyat, Muhammad Al-Shalhoub, Abdul Aziz Al-Khathran, Omar Al-Ghamdi, Sami Al-Jaber, Ibrahim Al-Suwaid, Obaid Al-Dosary, Abdullah Al-Jamaan and Hasan Al-Yami.
Prince Turki ibn Khaled, a member of the Saudi Football Federation and general supervisor of the Saudi team, said the players were picked by the team’s technical body led by coach Nasir Al-Jowhar.
Saudi Arabia cancel World Cup tune-up with Jamaica
World Cup qualifier Saudi Arabia canceled a scheduled friendly today in Japan, what was to have been part of the Saudi Arabia’s final preparations for the 32-team global football finals.
Horace Burrell, President of the Jamaican Football Federation, said the Saudis informed him that the venue thought to be available is no longer free and that there are no match officials available.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia lost 3-0 in a friendly match with a Tokyo team yesterday. Saudi coach Nasir Al-Jowhar had fielded 17 players in the match, his team’s last friendly in preparation for the World Cup.
Muhammad Al-Daie was the goalkeeper in the beginning of the match while Khamees Al-Owairan, Muhammad Noor, Muhammad Al-Shalhoub and Nawaf Al-Tamyat played in the center. Abdullah Al-Jamaan and Abdullah Al-Shaihan were the strikers.
First half ended with the Japanese team dominating the game with 1-0.
