JEDDAH, 23 January 2003 — The 2nd LG Table Tennis Tournament 2003 will begin from Jan. 31 at the Al-Hamra Sofitel hotel, H.K. Seo, general manager, LG Electronics said at a press conference here yesterday.

S.M. Arshad, marketing manager, LG Electronics, Asadullah Ghalib of Juffali and president Jeddah Table Tennis League, and Faheem A. Khan, DMD of ATEICO, and one of the organizers were also present.

“Last year LG held its first LG Table Tennis Tournament, in which 28 local teams participated,” Seo said, adding that following this success LG has decided to make this a tradition.

“Our philosophy for such activity is to relate it to our general business philosophy. Table tennis is related to our philosophy in terms of precision, exactness and perfection,” Seo said.

The opening ceremony of the seven-week event will be held at Jeddah’s Al-Hamra Sofitel hotel. Matches will begin from Feb. 7 and will be played every Friday. More than 40 teams are expected to participate.

S. M. Arshad explained that entry forms could be obtained from LG Office via fax. They can be contacted on phone numbers: 256-6367 and 256-1581. He said that terms and condition for participation are spelt out in detail. Entries close on Jan. 28.

He also said that like last year LG Trophy will be presented to the best team and individual singles and doubles winners and runners-up will also receive trophies.

LG also announced that LG products will be given out to the winners and Lucky Draw prizes will be given on the final day of prize distribution. Seo said that LG everybody is a winner.

LG Table Tennis Tournament will be directly supervised by LG management and Asadullah Ghalib, a veteran table tennis player, will act as the consultant. Jeddah Table Tennis League will also assist with umpiring and organization. LG’s Nadeem Khan and Ameem Khan are among the organizers.

Ghalib said that the last year’s champions will not participate in this year’s tournament as we need to encourage new talent to come forward. The team entry will be however, accepted. The tournament is divided into two groups A, B as per the team’s ratings.
