PESHAWAR, 11 March 2003 — Pakistani intelligence agents arrested five Al-Qaeda suspects in the northwest city of Peshawar at the weekend, police said yesterday.
“There was a raid by the secret agencies. The police were not informed,” a government official told AFP, referring to intelligence agencies which usually conduct raids without involving local police.
Two Afghans, one Iraqi, one Iranian and another Middle Eastern man of unspecified nationality were picked up in the predawn raid Sunday on the outskirts of Peshawar, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Afghan border. “The suspects may have links with Al-Qaeda,” a Peshawar police official.
