MAKKAH, 13 March 2003 — A Bangladeshi thief had his right hand amputated yesterday after he was caught stealing in the Grand Mosque, the Interior Ministry reported. The man was identified as Ghazi Mohammed Abdul Ghani, in the statement, carried by the official SPA news agency. The Kingdom imposes the death penalty, normally carried out by decapitation by sword, on people found guilty of murder, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking.
