RIYADH, 6 April 2003 — Two local newspapers, branding Iraqi rulers “tyrannical and oppressive”, yesterday urged the regime in Baghdad to step down in order to save the Iraqi people from more misery.
“Although it’s too late to avert more catastrophe, a last chance still exists for them (the regime) to abandon their vainglorious attitude,” Okaz daily said. “The regime should save their people from additional misery for which they have no blame except to be ruled by men who have no fear of God and who do not care for their country’s supreme interests,” the paper said.
Al-Youm also launched a blistering attack against the “tyrant” regime of Saddam Hussein, calling it the “most authoritarian regime in the history of Iraq.” Since taking over in 1979, Saddam Hussein has squandered Iraq’s vast wealth in a series of wars and disasters.
