DAMMAM, 6 May 2003 — Saudi Arabia has withdrawn its candidacy for the post of secretary-general of the International Geological Committee, according to Prince Turki ibn Nasser, chief of the Presidency of Meteorological and Environment Protection. Prince Turki was addressing the conference of the committee in Geneva yesterday and his speech was quoted by the PMEP office here.
The prince regretted the withdrawal of Kingdom’s candidacy from the elective post but said it became unavoidable as the Kingdom’s candidate Dr. Nizar Ibrahim Taufiq was not well.
Prince Turki also held meetings with the delegates of the Arab and Islamic countries attending the conference to find a consensus candidate for the coveted post.
He reaffirmed the Kingdom’s complete technical and scientific support for the endeavors of the committee.
The conference also confirmed its support for the Jeddah-based Center for Drought Study and the training center the presidency is setting up in the Asir region.
