JEDDAH, 27 October 2003 — A tennis tournament for juniors is one of the highlights of sports events organized during the holy month of Ramadan.
“The Panasonic Junior Tennis Tournament will be divided into five categories of participants, with singles and doubles matches,” Roberto Saavedra, a professional coach and chairman of the tournament committee of Jeddah Tennis Organization (JeTO), told Arab News yesterday. JeTo is organizing the tournament at the tennis courts of Sharbatly Village from Nov. 7 to 21.
The categories for singles are beginners, intermediate and advanced, while those for doubles are intermediate and advanced, he added. “The tournament is part of the JeTO’s program to promote tennis at the grassroots level,” Reggie Sanosa, tournament referee and member of the JeTO board, said.
This is the fourth tournament the JeTO organizes within some months of its establishment. It celebrates its first anniversary on Feb. 27.
Its first event was the Captain Osama Al-Sheikh Junior Tennis at the Spring Village Compound. This was followed by the Panasonic Junior Tennis Tournament at the Heba Compound. Over 70 juniors took part in each of these tournaments.
The JeTO then held the Prince Talal ibn Mansour Tennis Cup in the recent months at the tennis courts of Albilad Hotel. Zulfiqar Ahmed lifted the singles cup, and he and his brother Waqar won the doubles championship. The JeTO has Sergio Taga as chairman of the board, which includes Angelo Quitorio as spokesperson and administration committee chairman, Jovie Llevares as tournament director and founding member, and Al Reganon as finance committee chairman. The other board members are Roel Consumo who heads the audit committee, Elmer Domingo, treasurer and Dr. Ramon Moreno, secretary.
