HAMBURG, 28 October 2003 — Germany has no legal means to deal with makers and offenders for the new steroid THG and must take swift action to amend its legislation, German athletics federation (DLV) supremo Clemens Prokop said in an interview published yesterday.
“Everyone is talking about the doping scandal in the US but no one asks ‘what kind of consequences does it have in Germany’,” Prokop told the Tagesspiegel daily.
Naming German medical laws in connection with designer drugs such as THG “simply insufficient, the lawyer Prokop called on politicians to make amends quickly.
Propok said that neither the making nor the trafficking and consumption of such drugs was illegal under current laws.
Prokop said that political involvement was necessary because sports federations alone could not deal with such cases as the THG affair which has seemingly brought a new dimension to doping.
