MISSSISSAUGA, Canada, 3 November 2003 — Reigning world champion Yevgeni Plushenko and US teenager Sasha Cohen glided to gold Saturday at Skate Canada, despite deleting some jumps from their free skates.
Plushenko, 20, didn’t need his customary second quadruple, earning 152.40 points for his free skate under the new scoring system for a total of 233.65 points.
Canada’s Jeffrey Buttle jumped from fourth after the short program to second with 209.63 points, ahead of Japan’s Takeshi Honda, who won this event last year.
Cohen won her second straight Skate Canada title, just a week after she won gold at Skate America, the opening stop of the ISU figure skating Grand Prix.
Cohen didn’t land a jump combination in her Swan Lake routine, but in the end it didn’t matter as she posted a total score of 197.60 points. Shizuka Arakawa of Japan got 123.99 for her free skate to finish second with a total of 182.19 points. Hungary’s Julia Sebestyen was third with 165.22 points.
