DETROIT, 28 November 2003 — Kris Draper netted twice and veterans Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Brett Hull and Steve Thomas added single goals as the Detroit Red Wings routed the Edmonton Oilers 7-1 in NHL action on Wednesday. Rookie Darryl Bootland got Detroit’s other goal. Radek Dvorak scored a consolation effort for Edmonton, denying Manny Legace a shutout.

Detroit dominated in all aspects of the game, outshooting Edmonton 43-16 in what was Yzerman’s 1,400th NHL game.

Penguins 1 Flyers 1

In Pittsburgh, the Philadelphia Flyers extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games in a 1-1 tie with the Penguins.

The Flyers, who tied idle Vancouver for the league lead with 30 points, deserved better, as they out-shot the hosts 39-20.

Eric Chouinard beat Sebastien Caron for Philly’s lone goal, with Dick Tarnstrom tallying for Pittsburgh. The Flyers have now limited opponents to two or fewer goals in 12 of their last 13 games.

Hurricanes 2 Islanders 0

In Uniondale, New York, Josef Vasicek and Bret Hedican scored a couple of minutes apart late in the opening period as the Carolina Hurricanes surprised the New York Islanders 2-0. Kevin Weekes turned aside all 28 New York shots to earn the shutout, his second straight and fourth of the season.

Sabres 5 Capitals 2

In Buffalo, Miroslav Satan netted twice and Ales Kotalik and J.P. Dumont added to the scoreline as the Sabres notched four second-period goals on their way to a 5-2 win over the floundering Washington Capitals.

Despite managing just 19 shots in the entire game, the Capitals started well when Robert Lang scored his 13th goal of the season just 1:37 into the contest.

Panthers 3 Rangers 3

In Sunrise, Florida, the Panthers got a pair of goals from Olli Jokinen in a 3-3 tie with the New York Rangers. Ageless Mark Messier opened the scoring for New York, with Eric Lindros and Boris Mironov getting the other goals as the Rangers rallied from a 3-1 deficit.

Predators 4 Blue Jackets 2

In Nashville, Scott Walker scored twice to carry the Predators to a 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The loss left Columbus at 0-8-1-1 on the road in 2003-04. First overall draft pick Rick Nash did give the Jackets an early lead, scoring in the second minute.

Stars 3 Wild 1

In St. Paul, Minnesota, Bill Guerin got Dallas’ first and third goals — his 13th and 14th of the season — as the Stars downed the Wild 3-1. It was Dallas’ first road win since Oct. 25. Jason Wiemer scored midway through the opening period to deny Stars netminder Marty Turco a shutout.

Mighty Ducks 3 Devils 3

In Anaheim, in a rematch of the 2003 Stanley Cup final, the New Jersey Devils and Mighty Ducks skated to a 3-3 tie.

New Jersey has now gone 13 games without a loss, matching a club record. Sergei Fedorov tallied twice for Anaheim, scoring less than two minutes from the end of regulation to send the game into overtime.

Patrik Elias and John Madden had given the Devils the lead with third-period goals.

Sharks 3 Blackhawks 2

In San Jose, Niko Dimitrakos, Nils Ekman and Christian Ehrhoff did all the damage in the second period in leading the Sharks to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, who are now winless in nine games. Nathan Dempsey and Scott Nichol tallied for Chicago, which had 25 of the game’s 47 shots.
