PHILADELPHIA, 30 November 2003 — The Philadelphia Flyers extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games with a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.

While that is an impressive run, it still leaves them 24 games shy of the club and NHL record — the Flyers went 35 games without a loss in 1979-80, winning 25 times and tying 10.

Kim Johnsson had a hand in the first three Philadelphia goals, scored by Jeremy Roenick, Claude Lapointe and Joni Pitkanen. Tony Amonte closed out the scoring for the Flyers, with Eric Staal and Jesse Boulerice replying for Carolina.

Flyers netminder Robert Esche turned aside 28 shots to run his unbeaten streak to eight games.

Predators 2 Bruins 1

In Boston, those who arrived late for the noon hour start missed all the scoring as the Nashville Predators edged the Bruins 2-1.

All three goals were registered in the game’s first 13 minutes, Joe Thornton opening the scoring for Boston at 6:26.

David Legwand and Greg Johnson replied for Nashville in the next seven minutes.

Sharks 2 Wild 1

In St. Paul, Minnesota, captain Vincent Damphousse’s goal 1:19 into the second period proved to be the game winner as the surging San Jose Sharks surprised the underachieving Wild 2-1. Mike Ricci notched San Jose’s first goal midway through the opening period, with Andrew Brunette scoring for Minnesota in the fifth minute of the second to deny Sharks netminder Vesa Toskala a shutout.

Mighty Ducks 4 Blackhawks 3

In Anaheim, Sergei Fedorov, the NHL’s 1994 MVP while with Detroit, netted the game-winning goal midway through the final period as the Mighty Ducks dumped Chicago 4-3, leaving the struggling Blackhawks winless in 10 games. Petr Sykora, Joffrey Lupul and Jason Krog got the Ducks’ other goals, with Travis Moen, Igor Radulov and Mikhail Yakubov keeping Chicago close.

Canadiens 5 Capitals 3

In Washington, Sheldon Souray had six scoring chances and made good on two of them as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Capitals 5-3.

The teams combined to score three times in the last three and a half minutes of the opening period, the Caps’ Robert Lang notching his 14th goal before Pierre Dagenais and Michael Ryder countered for the Canadiens.

In Pittsburgh, Martin Rucinsky scored twice and Eric Lindros and Brian Leetch added singles as the New York Rangers routed the Penguins 4-1.Rico Fata got Pittsburgh’s lone goal, denying Rangers netminder Jussi Markkanen a shutout.

Lightning 2 Blues 2

In Tampa Bay, the St. Louis Blues got third-period goals from Eric Nickulas and Keith Tkachuk to earn a 2-2 tie with the Lightning. Fredrik Modin and Dan Boyle had staked Tampa, now 8-2-2-1 at home, to a 2-0 lead after two periods.

Red Wings 6 Islanders 0

In Detroit, Stockport, England-born Steve Thomas, who helped Anaheim to the Stanley Cup final last spring, netted two first-period goals as the Red Wings thumped the New York Islanders 6-0. Brendan Shanahan, Pavel Datsyuk, Kris Draper and Brett Hull also tallied for the Wings.

In Dallas, the Stars ended the New Jersey Devils’ 13-game unbeaten streak with a 2-0 victory. Ex-Edmonton Oilers Bill Guerin and Jason Arnott scored for Dallas and Marty Turco turned aside all 21 New Jersey shots to earn the shutout.

Sabres 4 Panthers 3

In Buffalo, Daniel Briere got two of the Sabres’ three third-period goals as they rallied to edge the Florida Panthers 4-3.

Taylor Pyatt got the third, the game-winner, with five and a half minutes to play. Stephen Weiss had two goals and Juraj Kolnik a single for the Panthers.

Avalanche 4 Oilers 1

In Edmonton, Joe Sakic had a goal and two assists to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-1 win over the Oilers, who had 41 of the game’s 68 shots. Sakic helped on goals by Teemu Selanne and Martin Skoula. Marc-Andre Bergeron got Edmonton’s lone marker midway through the final period.
