TORONTO, 8 December 2003 — Gary Roberts and Mats Sundin both had a goal and an assist to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, the team’s eighth straight victory.

Roberts notched the game-winner in the second period as Toronto moved within two points of the first-place Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference and the overall NHL standings.

Brett Hull opened the scoring for the Red Wings in the last minute of the first period. It was his 731st career goal and tied him with Marcel Dionne for third on the all-time list.

Brendan Shanahan added a second-period marker for the Red Wings, who had their five-game unbeaten streak snapped.

In Ottawa, Brian Gionta produced the game-winner with 18 seconds left in the third period as the New Jersey Devils edged the Senators 2-1. Daniel Alfresson scored early in the first period for the Senators, who held the lead until Scott Niedermayer struck with 1:37 remaining in the game.

Bruins 1 Flyers 1

In Boston, Mark Recchi evened it up early in the second period and Jeff Hackett made 38 saves to help the Philadelphia Flyers to a 1-1 tie with the Bruins. Sergei Samsonov gave the Bruins the lead with a power-play goal in the first period.

Islanders 5 Blackhawks 2

In Uniondale, New York, Alexei Yashin’s two goals steered the Islanders to a 5-2 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks. Dave Scatchard, Trent Hunter and Eric Cairns also scored for the Islanders, who snapped a seven-game losing skid.

Lightning 3 Sabres 1

In Buffalo, Dave Andreychuk tallied the go-ahead goal midway through the second period as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Sabres 3-1. Dmitry Afanasenkov and Fredrik Modin also scored for the Lightning, who earned their first win in seven games.

Canadiens 3 Hurricanes 1

In Montreal, Michael Ryder assisted on Saku Koivu’s game-winner before netting an insurance goal in the third period to help the Canadiens to a 3-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Thrashers 4 Panthers 3 (OT)

In Sunrise, Slava Kozlov’s goal at 2:57 in overtime gave the Atlanta Thrashers a 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers. Ben Simon tied the game midway through the third period for the Thrashers, who had trailed 3-1.

Blues 4 Predators 1

In St. Louis, Mark Rycroft tallied twice in the third period as the Blues cruised past the Nashville Predators 4-1. Mike Danton and Pavol Demitra handed the Blues a two-goal lead in the first period while Petr Cajanek recorded two assists.

Avalanche 5 Blue Jackets 1

In Denver, Joe Sakic notched the winning goal and three assists to give the Colorado Avalanche a 5-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Teemu Selanne, Milan Hejduk, Derek Morris and Andrei Nikolishin also netted for the Avalanche.

Oilers 4 Penguins 3

In Edmonton, Shawn Horcoff tallied early in the third period as the Oilers came from behind to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3. Ryan Smyth and Cory Cross both had a goal and an assist for the Oilers. Mike York scored the other Edmonton marker.

Wild 1 Canucks 1

In Vancouver, Trevor Linden’s goal with 2:52 left in regulation carried the Canucks to a 1-1 tie with the Minnesota Wild. Dwayne Roloson was brilliant in goal for the Wild, stopping 33 shots. Johan Hedberg had to make only 16 saves for the Canucks.

Sharks 2 Stars 1

In San Jose, Nils Ekman scored the game-winner on a penalty shot in the second period as the Sharks overcame the Dallas Stars 2-1. Vesa Toskala made 15 saves in goal for the Sharks.

Kings 7 Capitals 3

In Los Angeles, Ziggy Palffy and Michael Cammalleri both notched two goals to guide the Kings to a 7-3 victory over the Washington Capitals. Martin Straka, Alexander Frolov and Trent Klatt had the other Los Angeles markers.
