WASHINGTON, 21 December 2003 — Olaf Kolzig made 32 saves and Kip Miller notched a goal and an assist to earn the Washington Capitals a battling 2-2 tie with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.

The Maple Leafs extended their franchise-record points streak to 13 games (11-0-1-1) but the stalemate ended a six-game winning run on the road, one shy of another club record.

Dainius Zubrus scored the other goal as the Capitals improved to 2-1-2 under new coach Glen Hanlon.

Robert Lang celebrated his 33rd birthday with two assists for Washington, which picked up its second tie in a row.

Alexei Ponikarovsky and Mats Sundin tallied for the Maple Leafs while Trevor Kidd turned aside 25 shots in his second game of the season.

In Buffalo, Brian Gionta fired two goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist to carry the New Jersey Devils to a 5-2 triumph over the Sabres.

Jeff Friesen, John Madden and Sergei Brylin also scored while Scott Gomez contributed two assists as the Devils matched their best offensive output of the season.

In Columbus, Matthew Lombardi’s short-handed goal in the first period stood up as the winner and gave the Calgary Flames a 2-1 victory over the Blue Jackets. Martin Gelinas also scored in the opening session for the Flames, who are undefeated in five games.

In Sunrise, Marcus Nilson netted a short-handed goal in the second period as the Florida Panthers edged the Dallas Stars 1-0. Roberto Luongo totaled 36 saves for the shutout as the Panthers won for the first time in four games.

In Detroit, Nicklas Lidstrom notched the game-winner in the third period to hand the Red Wings a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Ray Whitney and Brendan Shanahan also tallied while Henrik Zetterberg added two assists as the Red Wings secured their fourth straight win.

Brett McLean and Burke Henry replied for the Blackhawks, who are winless in four games.

Mighty Ducks 1 Avalanche 0

In Anaheim, Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 38 saves for his first shutout of the season and 17th of his career as the Mighty Ducks beat the Colorado Avalanche 1-0.
