JEDDAH — Al-Ahli of Jeddah scored an important 2-0 win against Al-Riyadh of Riyadh in the King Fahd Cup Soccer Tournament at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal stadium here. Both goals were scored in the first half. The first was by the Brazilian international player Betchard in the 37th minute and the second by Fawzi Al-Shihri in the 40th minute.

In Dammam, Al-Nasr beat against Al-Qadisiya 2-1 and Al-Shabab thumped Al-Ansar of Madinah 4-0 in Riyadh.

The Next matches are scheduled for Wednesday when Al-Ittihad play Al-Taie in Hail and Nasr take on Al-Ittifaq in Riyadh.

Girondins Bordeaux Claim 2-0 Win Over Sochaux

In Paris, goals by Cyril Rool and Lilian Laslandes earned Girondins Bordeaux a deserved 2-0 victory over Sochaux in the early Ligue 1 game yesterday.

The Aquitaine side provisionally move to third in the standings with seven points from four matches.The hosts opened the scoring after 38 minutes when former RC Lens left back Rool blasted home a perfect Camel Meriem cross.

Laslandes wrapped up the win from the penalty spot in the 87th minute after Souleymane Diawara fouled Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh.

Atletico Ease to Opening-Day Victory Over Malaga

In Madrid, Atletico Madrid got the new league season underway with a confident 2-0 win at home to Malaga yesterday.

After a series of near-misses, Atletico took the lead when Ariel Ibagaza’s shot came back off a post and rebounded in off Malaga keeper Juan Calatayud just before half-time.

Five minutes after the break, Spanish international striker Fernando Torres finished off a swift counter-attack for the clinching second. Real Betis had to be content with a 1-1 draw away to promoted Numancia in their opening game.
