NEW YORK, 8 September 2004 — Daniel Cabrera pitched 7 1/3 strong innings to help the Baltimore Orioles mark their return to Camden Yards after a two-week road trip with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Twins in the American League Monday.
It was the seventh victory in eight games for the Orioles, who had previously lost 12 in a row. Baltimore won two out of three against East Division-leading New York at Yankee Stadium on the weekend.
Cabrera (11-7) allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts and four walks Monday. BJ Ryan claimed the last two outs in the eighth inning before Jorge Julio pitched a scoreless ninth to complete the four-hitter and notch his 21st save of the season.
Melvin Mora and Jose Leon each drove in two runs and had two hits. Brian Roberts and Tim Raines Jr both added two hits and scored a run apiece. Terry Mulholland (4-8) gave up four runs on nine hits over five innings to take the loss, striking out four batters and walking four.
Augie Ojeda drove in the lone run for Central Division-leading Minnesota with a sacrifice fly. The Twins have a 7 1/2-game advantage over the Chicago White Sox.
In New York, Orlando Hernandez tossed seven innings to lead the Yankees past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 7-4. It was originally due to be a doubleheader but the Devil Rays were late because of travel problems caused by Hurricane Frances. New York wanted the Devil Rays to forfeit but Major League Baseball turned down the request. Alex Rodriguez belted a three-run double to spark a four-run fourth inning for the Yankees, who moved three games ahead of idle Boston in the East Division. Bernie Williams had two hits and drove in two runs for the Yankees, who had 12 hits in the game. Hernandez (7-0) allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Paul Quantrill finished up for his first save of the season, giving up two runs on four hits in two innings.
Doug Waechter (3-7) surrendered five runs on six hits over four innings and took the loss. Jorge Cantu and Geoff Blum homered for the Devil Rays.
In Arlington, Carl Everett homered to lead the Chicago White Sox to their fourth straight win, a 7-4 decision over the Texas Rangers. Jason Grilli (1-1) allowed three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings to seize the win. Shingo Takatsu recorded two outs for his 17th save of the season. Michael Young, David Dellucci and Kevin Mench homered for the Rangers. Chan Ho Park (3-5) made two errors and gave up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings to take the loss.
In Detroit, Wil Ledezma pitched six solid innings as the Tigers (63-72) beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3. The Tigers ensured they would not lose 100 games for the third successive season and now have 20 more wins than they managed last year. Ledezma (4-2) allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits and Gary Knotts pitched the final three innings for his second save of the campaign. Craig Monroe homered and Omar Infante drove in three runs for Detroit.
In Seattle, CC Sabathia tossed a five-hit shutout as the Cleveland Indians blanked the Mariners 5-0. Sabathia (11-9) struck out eight batters and walked one in pitching his fifth complete game and second career shutout. Omar Vizquel, Travis Hafner, Casey Blake and Matt Lawton homered for Cleveland. Gil Meche (4-6) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Ichiro Suzuki had two hits to move within 31 of George Sisler’s 1920 record of 257 in a season.
In Oakland, David Ortiz homered and drove in four runs to carry the Boston Red Sox to an 8-3 triumph over the Athletics. Manny Ramirez also homered for the Red Sox while Dave Roberts had two hits and drove in a run. Ortiz broke open the game with a three-run double in the ninth. Bronson Arroyo (8-9) went 6 2/3 innings for the win, allowing three runs on seven hits.
