NEW YORK, 29 September 2004 — Terry Glenn scored the winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter as the Dallas Cowboys continued their domination of the Washington Redskins with a 21-18 win in Landover, Maryland on Monday.
Richie Anderson’s halfback option to Glenn made his first career completion after four pass attempts a memorable one as it gave Dallas a 21-10 advantage that the Redskins could never recover despite a late touchdown.
“It’s a play we worked on all week,” Anderson said. “I’m just thankful he (Glenn) got in there.” Dallas (2-1) has now won 13 of its last 14 meetings with Washington (1-2), including a 27-0 win last December in the Cowboys first shutout of the Redskins in 32 years.
It was the first meeting between veteran coaches Bill Parcells and Joe Gibbs in 14 years, with the former continuing his domination of the series.
Parcells has now won 12 of the 18 meetings, including the last seven. Anderson did not even play last week but was vital in the win, catching two passes himself for 41 yards and rushing for 20 yards on four carries.
The Cowboys won despite being out-gained 380-287 in total yards and managing just 50 yards rushing in the game.
Vinny Testaverde went just 14-for-29 for 214 yards, but he did hit Jason Witten with a 10-yard TD strike early in the third quarter to give the Cowboys a 14-3 lead. Eddie George scored Dallas’ other touchdown on a one-yard run in the first quarter. George had just 19 yards rushing in the game on 11 carries.
Mark Brunell struggled early but wound up 25-for-43 for 325 yards and two touchdowns to Rod Gardner, a one-yard toss in the third quarter and a 15-yard strike with 4:40 to play.
However, he was sacked five times and the majority of his passing yards came late in the game with Dallas ahead by 11 points. Gardner caught 10 passes for 167 yards, including a 49-yard catch that set up the game’s final touchdown. Clinton Portis had 94 yards rushing on 24 carries for the Redskins, while a 19-yard John Hall field goal and a Taylor Jacobs two-point convert reception from Brunell accounted for the other Washington points.
NFL Raiders Lose QB Gannon for Six Weeks
In Oakland, California, Oakland Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon will miss the next six weeks of the season after suffering a broken vertebra in his neck, team officials said here Monday.
After having his 2003 season shortened by a shoulder injury, Gannon had a similar fate when his neck was hurt on a helmet-to-helmet hit by linebacker Derrick Brooks in the first half of Sunday’s 30-20 victory over Tampa Bay.
