JEDDAH, 1 October 2004 — Al-Nasr of Riyadh registered a thumping 6-2 victory against Al-Wehda of Makkah in the King Fahd Cup Soccer Tournament at the Prince Faisal ibn Fahd Stadium in Riyadh.
The victory enabled Nasr to stay in the second position behind Al-Shabab with 15 points, one point less than Shabab who have 16 points.
The game totally controlled by Nasr from the beginning when Mansur Al-Thagafi struck the first goal in the third minute of the match making it the fastest goal so far in the tournament.
Two minutes later, Saad Al-Zahrani scored the Nasr’s second from a penalty kick and from then on the Wehda goal was in a veritable siege. Wehda managed to score a goal in the 15th minute on a counter move but they fell back by two goals soon enough.
The third Nasr goal came in the 42nd minute when Saad Al-Harthi scored. In the second half, Naser scored three goals in the 60th and 84th and 90th minutes through Faisal Seef, Naser Al-Halawi and Abu Athar. Wehda got their second goal in the injury time through Al-Mousa.
On Wednesday Shabab scored a superb 2-0 win over Al-Qadisiya in a game played in Riyadh. The goals came in the 33rd and 78th minutes of play with international player Atram netting both.
Today, four important matches will take place. First Al-Ahli will play against Ohod of Madinah in Madinah, Al-Ittihad take on Al-Ansar of Madinah in Jeddah, Al-Hilal go against Al-Riyadh in a Riyadh derby and Al-Taie will play against Al-Ittifaq in Hail.
Reuters adds: In Maribor, Slovenia, twice-winners Parma did just enough to reach the group stage of the UEFA Cup yesterday, a goalless draw away to Slovenia’s Maribor sending the Serie A strugglers through 3-2 on aggregate.
Parma, winners in 1995 and 1999, have made a dismal start to the league season but Italy’s basement club survived a test of nerve to keep their European campaign alive.
Maribor pushed Parma back in the opening exchanges with Albanian striker Kliton Bozgo forcing Parma keeper Gianluca Berti into a smart save. The hosts then threatened again with Danijel Brezic shooting narrowly wide after a break by captain Stipe Balajic.
In Rotterdam, Feyenoord cruised through to the second round of the UEFA Cup with a 4-1 victory over Odd Grenland of Norway. After winning the first leg 1-0 Feyenoord took command in the second minute when Pascal Bosschaart opened the scoring following a Shinji Ono corner — his first ever goal. Dirk Kuijt doubled the lead on the stroke of halftime. Four minutes into the second half Canadian Olivier Occean pulled one back for Grenland before Bart Goor struck home.
