CALICUT, 27 February 2005 — People from different parts of the southern Indian state of Kerala and neighboring Karnataka and Tamil Nadu continued to throng the Karanthur village near here for the second consecutive day to attend the 27th anniversary celebrations of Markazu Ssaquafathi Ssunniyya.
Noted Islamic scholar Dr. Habeeb Ali Sainul Abidin Al-Jaffri opened the three-celebrations Friday evening. Scholars from India and abroad attended the seminars and prayer meetings held yesterday. The seminars discussed the challenges of the Muslim society in the face of globalization and the socio-economic issues of Indian minorities.
A resolution adopted by the session urged the National Minority Education Commission to ensure academic excellence of minority institutions and keep away commercial interests while formulating policies. Speaking at the inaugural session, Jaffri said the secular tradition of India was a model for all countries to emulate. “The rich cultural tradition of India has been lauded the world over,” he said.
