ISLAMABAD, 28 February 2005 — Up to 10 school children died and many others were injured after their bus overturned during a school outing yesterday.
The children were killed in the accident on the Islamabad-Lahore motorway, motorway police said.
The bus with 40 children aboard was headed from Rawalpindi to the Khewra Salt Mines on a study and picnic trip, said the official.
It hit a crash barrier 120 kilometers southwest of Islamabad and overturned after its brakes failed in the twisting and hilly Salt Range section of the motorway.
According to details the bus driver was driving speedily on a turn and lost control. The bus turned turtle, smashed into a roadside safety barrier and landed into a ditch, said police official Malik Mohammed Sabir. Many of the children were younger than 10 years.
