DHAKA, 6 March 2005 — Myanmar has decided to release 75 Bangladeshi prisoners from different jails who had served prison terms of 2 to 25 years on a number of charges.

The prisoners would be sent to Bangladesh after necessary preparations, a communiqué of Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said in Dhaka yesterday.

It said, “The decision has been taken as a gesture of warming relationship between the two countries following a very successful visit of the Myanmar Foreign Minister to Bangladesh recently.”

The Myanmar Foreign Minister’s tour of Bangladesh is being seen in Yangon as a “successful one having a very positive impact”. The Myanmar government also looks forward to a visit by its prime minister to Dhaka, it said.

Meanwhile, a Foreign Ministry spokesman yesterday termed baseless some newspaper reports that the Bangladesh government has requested Pakistan to withdraw its High Commissioner from Dhaka.
