RIYADH, 9 March 2005 — The World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Organization of Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross (OARCRC) to channel its relief and humanitarian activities through the organization. The agreement was signed by WAMY Secretary-General Dr. Saleh Sulaiman Al-Wohaibi and General Secretary of OARCRC Dr. Abdullah Al-Hazaa at WAMY headquarters yesterday. OARCRC is an umbrella organization for the Red Crescent and Red Cross societies in the Arab world.
Dr. Wohaibi said the two parties would coordinate not only in carrying out relief activities but also offer training for field officers who do relief work in the field.
“Our relief workers should know the nature of the work they are doing and should be aware of the international regulations governing them,” Dr. Wohaibi said, adding that ignorance of the law in the host countries would only lead to problems despite their valuable services to those in need.
He noted that working under the umbrella of the OARCRC would provide more transparency for WAMY’s activities and further legitimize them since it will operate through internationally recognized bodies.
